(5 Nov 2020) Hairdressers in England welcomes their last clients Wednesday as the country prepared to join large swathes of Europe in a coronavirus lockdown designed to save the healthcare system from being overwhelmed.
All non-essential venues, which in England included pubs, restaurants, hairdressers, gyms, swimming pools, entertainment venues and stores selling items like books, clothing will have to close Thursday until at least December 2.
That ruling came after a sudden change of course last weekend by Britain's government, which had for weeks been advocating a targeted regional response instead of a national lockdown.
Richard Ward who owns a hair salon in London's central Sloane Square said all staff had been working back to back and he'd extended his opening hours to fit in all the bookings he'd had since the lockdown was announced during the weekend.
Ward said news of the latest lockdown measures seemed to have compelled lots of people to 'throw caution to the wind'.
"We've taken 1,400 bookings since Saturday,'' he said.
Despite the high number of last-minute bookings, Ward said his business suffered major financial loss.
