Caruana continued with 4. f3, supporting the pawn on d4 and preparing to castle kingside. Aronian played 4...c5, attacking the pawn on d4 and hoping to gain control of the center of the board. Caruana responded with 5. d5, opening up the position and hoping to gain space on the queenside. Aronian played 5...b5, attacking the pawn on c4 and hoping to gain control of the center of the board.

The rest of the game saw Caruana and Aronian trading pieces and trying to gain an advantage. Caruana sacrificed a pawn on move 15 with 15. O-O-O, hoping to gain a strong attack against Aronian's king. However, Aronian was able to defend well and counterattack, eventually winning the game with a strong passed pawn on the queenside. The final position saw Aronian with a rook and a pawn versus Caruana's knight, with Aronian's pawns on the queenside ready to promote. Caruana resigned, giving Aronian the win.
