As you can see the video ends abruptly during normal, stable flight. The on-board video had to be recovered with video repair software as the camera lost power while writing data to the memory card. The drone simply went dark and quiet during otherwise normal flight. The video here is from three sources. The drones on-board Zenmuse X3 4k camera, an Axis P5512 PTZ security camera near the front door, and a Ring Video Doorbell Pro which happened to catch the incident.
After watching the footage countless times, I have two theories as to what happened:
1. The battery pack was not completely latched into the drone, and it vibrated loose enough to disconnect power from the drone. I had noticed having to be very intentional about latching it in during several previous flights. This being my 4th pack of the day I suspect I wasn't diligent about ensuring it was fully latched. That won't happen again.
2. The battery pack may have failed. This particular pack was one of two "bad" batteries that came with the drone along with two apparently "good" batteries. They simply wouldn't turn on and were discharged to an extremely low voltage. I was able to "recover" both of them using an advanced R/C battery charger which left them in what appeared to be a usable state. I cycled them a few times and decided they were good to go. I took this risk due to the extremely high cost of the DJI batteries. That also wont happen again.
While the drone does not appear to be cost effective to repair, primarily due to the cost of replacing the camera, there is significant value in the accessories, controllers, batteries, etc. which also came with it. I plan to keep this one for spare parts, and try again with another previously enjoyed DJI Inspire, likely with the Zenmuse X5 camera this time around. More to come.
