NATO Expansion| Relevance of NATO| NATO Membership for Sweden and Finland| Around The World|

In this episode, Pooja Dwivedi engages with the story behind the events that made the most important international news headlines. Today she probes the following-
Sweden and Finland applied for NATO membership in May last year. But, Hungary and Turkey have not yet agreed on the membership of these two Nordic countries. Actually Turkey has blame on Sweden of giving shelter to 'Kurdish rebels', and expressed its objection to the membership of Finland and Sweden. Due to which both the countries have not yet become members. But it is likely that by the end of the year both countries will agree on the membership of Sweden and Finland. While Norway, coming in the 'Scandinavian-group', is a founding member of NATO since 1949. But Sweden and Finland, till now, not only kept distance from any military organization like NATO, but also made 'demilitarization' the core element of their foreign policy. In fact, Sweden and Finland are the only sovereign states in geographically northern Europe that are not members of NATO. Whereas, Finland shares a long border directly with Russia, while Sweden connects to the Russian border through the Baltic Sea. After Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Sweden and Finland are also in fear of Russian aggression. Because Sweden and Finland were among the countries that raised their voice against the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
