Transcript:

Norwegian Air, one of the largest low-cost airlines in Europe, warns it could collapse as the airline is experiencing more difficulties each day as the coronavirus impacts its operations.

Just a few days ago, Norwegian Air announced they would ground 40% of their fleet and lay off up to 50% employees.

However, they have now announced 85% of flights will be cancelled and approximately 90% of their employees (7,300 workers) will be temporarily laid off.

“It is indeed with a heavy heart we have to temporarily lay off more than 7,300 of our colleagues, but we unfortunately have no choice. However, I want to emphasize that this is temporary, because when the world returns to normalcy my goal is to keep as many of our dedicated colleagues as possible”, said Norwegian CEO Jacob Schram.

Additionally, Norwegian Air will cancel thousands of flights from March 21, 2020. All of Norwegian Air’s long-haul flights will be cancelled until April 17, but that could be extended.

As long-haul flights will be cancelled, Norwegian Air will likely ground most of its, if not all, Boeing 787 Dreamliner fleet.

As a result, beginning March 25, 2020, Norwegian Air will only operate a handful of short-haul routes out of Oslo, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Stavanger, and Bergen.

Norwegian’s CEO Jacob Schram admits that Norwegian Air is “weeks, not months” away from collapse if they do not receive financial support.

However, there may be a sliver of hope as Norwegian Air has discussed with Norway’s government to protect aviation in Norway and secure crucial infrastructure and jobs.

Norwegian has been significantly impacted by problems within the past year, such as the 737 MAX crisis which forced the airline to cut transatlantic routes and more.

Lately, Norwegian Air has been impacted by the United States’ travel ban on Europe, which forced them to cut some long-haul routes in the beginning, but Norwegian has now decided to terminate all long-haul flights.
