Dutch baritone Thomas Oliemans graduated from the Amsterdam Conservatory, coached by Margreet Honig. He continued his studies with KS Robert Holl, Elio Battaglia and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau.

A regular guest at De Nationale Opera in Amsterdam, he has appeared there as Papageno in Simon McBurney's production of Die Zauberflöte, Schaunard in La Bohème, Kothner in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Peter in Hänsel und Gretel and Lescaut in Manon Lescaut.

Highlights in 2019/20 include a return to De Nationale Opera as Don Alfonso in Jossi Wieler’s production of Cosi fan tutte, conducted by Ivor Bolton, and as Bill in Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny. In concert, he will perform Beethoven’s Symphony No.9 with the Yomiuri Symphony Orchestra under Ivor Bolton, Bach’s Matthäus-Passion, conducted by Peter Dijkstra, and Strauss Die Frau ohne Schatten, conducted by Yannick Nézet-Séguin, both with the Rotterdam Philharmonic, Mahler’s Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen with Het Residentie Orkest, and Richard Danielpour’s Elegies with the Philharmonie Zuidnederland conducted by Hartmut Haenchen. He will return to the Oxford Lieder Festival and to Wigmore Hall for recitals with Malcolm Martineau and make his house and role debut as Stolzius in Die Soldaten by Bernd Alois Zimmermann at Oper Köln.

Elsewhere, he has appeared as Guglielmo in Cosi fan tutte and Donner in Das Rheingold at the Grand Théâtre de Genève, Ramiro in a concert version ofL'Heure espagnole with the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, Eisenstein in Die Fledermaus and Marcello in La Bohème at the Opéra National du Rhin, Frank in Die tote Stadt at the Opéra national de Lorraine, Gonsalvo Fieschi in Schreker's Die Gezeichneten at the Salzburger Festspiele and Schaunard at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden.

Thomas Oliemans has worked with conductors such as Esa-Pekka Salonen, Charles Dutoit, Jiři Bělohlávek, Hans-Christoph Rademann, Ingo Metzmacher, Semyon Bychkov, Raphaël Pichon, Antonello Manacorda, Marc Albrecht, Ivor Bolton, Frans Brüggen, Edo de Waart, Kent Nagano, Jaap van Zweden and stage directors including Robert Carsen, Fiona Shaw, Christof Loy, Willy Decker, Pierre Audi, Ivo van Hove, Philipp Himmelmann, David Alden, Sir Thomas Allen, Stephen Langridge and Laurent Pelly.

A sought-after recitalist, he is a regular guest at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam and has appeared in Oxford, Cambridge, Vienna, Zürich, New York, Toronto, Basle, London (Wigmore Hall), Tokyo and Paris with pianists Malcolm Martineau, Roger Vignoles, Rudolf Jansen and Paolo Giacometti. He curated the 2019 Delft Chamber Music Festival and will be on the Jury of the 2019 International Vocal Competition s’Hertogenbosch, where he will also give masterclasses and appear in recital with Graham Johnson.
