The annual Death Diving - or 'Dodsing' in Norwegian - championships were held in Oslo on Saturday.

The amateur sport is a viral sensation with the risk of doing a belly-flop ever present.

The concept is simple: jump off something very tall into a body of water and try to make it look as close to death as possible.

Competitors leap from a 10-metre-high diving board, spreading their body into a classic 'X' shape, holding the pose for as long as possible before hitting the water. There is also a freestyle variety, with participants performing radical, acrobatic tricks.

While most enter the water-stomach first, the sport's founders developed a technique to avoid belly-flops: tuck your body in at the last second to make the knees break the water tension.

Dives are judge on several criteria: Running speed, jump height, jump length, acrobatics, degree of difficulty, holding a pose before entry, entry style and splash size.

This year's female winner was Marina Hamberg from Sweden. Local favourite Kim Andre Knutsen triumphed in the men's competition.

The championships were held on the historic grounds of Frognerbadet in Oslo where it all began in the late 1960s.
