Throughout the 1960's (1963-1968), legendary movies about the adventures of the Indian Apache chief Winnetou, based on Karl May's novels, were filmed in Croatia.
Karl Friedrich May (1842.-1912.) was a German writer of adventure novels, remembered by millions of readers. His travelogues were translated into three dozen foreign languages and printed in millions of copies. The Winnetou films, originating in a coproduction of Rialto Film from Berlin and Jadran Film from Zagreb, are considered as the most popular films of all time in Germany. In the county of Zadar, tourists can explore a wonderful natural attraction with a history: a landscape that even enchanted the film crew during the making of the Karl May "Winnetou" movies. Shortly before it flows into the Novigrad sea, the karst Zrmanja River flows through a wild and romantic gorge that cuts through the rough and rocky landscape before the emerald green shimmering water of the Zrmanja River empties in the sea. The Zrmanja Canyon is an untouched piece of heaven on earth. The best way to explore the Zrmanja Canyon is from the town of Jasenice (towards Obrovac), which is located several kilometers east of Maslenica. Obrovac is situated directly on karst Zrmanja River, but the access to the canyon, however, lies in front of the village a way. It is recommended to use the telephone poles as guides. There is a path leading to a viewing platform above the canyon between pole numbers 86 and 87. There is a sign with the instructions: "Parizevacka glavica". A plaque at the plateau points out where Karl May's "Winnetou" was filmed.

Those who are not necessarily interested in the canyon's film can also explore the unique river landscape of canyons, for example, from the water. Many tourists take the chance to navigate through the canyon by canoe or kayak. A good starting point for a canoe trip is Kastel Zegarski, where there is also a rafting vendors. The village is located about 19 kilometers east of Obrovac on the Zrmanja River, but still behind the Krupa tributary. In general, about half of the more than 70 kilometer long river is navigable. The approximately 4-hour-long rafting trip (swimming breaks and meals included) starts across a few small water levels until reaching the imposing Visoki Buk Waterfall. The 13 meter high waterfall can also be seen from an 80-meter long footpath going along the banks. The journey continues again, passing by rapids, smaller sinter terraces and waterfalls as well as by Ogarov Buk until reaching the village of Muskovici. This is the final destination and from here, participants will be brought back to the starting point.
