Gavotte and Musette, by Fartein Valen, is an atonal work that demonstrates the composer’s proficiency in counterpoint. The Musette’s drone is anchored to the deep low F key.

Valen was born in Norway to a missionary family. Throughout his life, he would maintain his piety. He graduated with an organ-playing degree from the Oslo Conservatory and moved on to Berlin to study composition under Max Bruch. Once Valen returned to Oslo, he gained employment as a staff member of the University of Oslo. Initially, in the 1910s and 1920s, his dissonant contrapuntal works (which include over 25,000 unofficial etudes) did not gain favor with conservatory critics. His compositions gained much of its current fame and recognition only a few years before his death.
