Frozen | Heimr Árnadalr & Coronation (Lyrics & Translation)

Let me open by saying that I’m a Scandi-stuff addic- student, with Swedish as vehicular language. All I could put together in this video comes from my knowledge of Scandinavian languages and their add-on studies. Both the English translation and transcriptions in runes are made by me, and each and every suggestion and correction is more than warmly welcome.

Now, some linguistic-historic dissertation, for those who might be interested, to try and answer the question: what language is actually spoken in Arendelle?
- History and geography.
If we can take as reference the date on the map shown at the end of “Frozen Fever”, we can assume that the movie takes place in July 1840 (MDCCCXL), and if we want to identify Arendelle with the city of Arendal, we can place this kingdom in southern Norway.
Back in 1840, Norway was part of the Sweden-Norway union, a personal union (one monarch, but distinct boundaries, laws, political systems…) under the Swedish crown. We can guess that the kingdom of Arendelle was a small state that managed somehow to keep its independence from both Norway and Sweden.
- Spoken language.
The language spoken then was probably a Norwegian dialect of the time. We can most definitely exclude that Old Norse was spoken at the time, as around 1350 in Norway people were moving on to speak old Norwegian dialects, though runes where still used to write them, together with later Latin alphabet. We can guess that in this kingdom, Old Norse was still used in official rites the same way Latin is still used in some churches today. For this reason, I used the Norwegian version of the movie, to make the characters speak in the closest language we can get.
- Written language.
I decided to use Younger Futhark instead of Elder Futhark to transcribe the Old Norse parts, as this is the script we can see at the beginning of the movie, when the king looks up the location of the trolls. Of course, runes were not usually used to write on paper, they were mainly carved in stone. When paper started to enter Scandinavia, the script shifted gradually to Latin alphabet. Papers written in any form of Futhark are rather rare.
