Norwegian man ruins Mayors grand opening and walks away

The controversial glass lift in Arendal was supposed to cost 50 million, but ended up at up to 100. According to NRK, the project has been described as Sørlandet's answer to the diving tower in Hamar.

During the opening, Leif Kydland stepped forward and cut the cord of the glass elevator in front of the eyes of Mayor Robert C. Nordli.

- I did it to make a demonstration of misuse of money. Had we been a rich municipality where we did not need to turn the crown, the situation would have been completely different. Still, it would have been wrong to spend over 100 million for a small elevator. The view is there. It's just going up on the heath, says Leif Kydland to VG, and adds:

- If we had a municipality with a flow of money, it would have been fine. It is the glass elevator and the economy that is the big talking point in Arendal city. Then, of course, it is the inhabitants that go beyond.

Increased tax
He says he has long been critical of the financial management in the municipality.

- What I did shows the dissatisfaction that I have because we have a disadvantaged financial municipality. We were promised that the property tax would not be increased. But after an economic crisis, the municipality was forced to increase the property tax over 100 percent. This means that they have to close down poor financial management, Kydland claims.
It was Agderposten that first mentioned the case.

- Can not live on a tourist magnet
Kydland himself says that he has gotten worse financially.

- For my part, I increased the property tax by over one hundred percent. Now I have to pay more than 1000 kroner a month, and I have a normal home in a completely normal location, he says.

Kydland believes that the municipality should not focus on tourism, but rather prioritize the inhabitants.

- The lift will probably be a tourist magnet, but you can not float on a tourist magnet at any cost. It is the costs that are the main point here. An ordinary man in the street wants a Porsche Cayenne for two million, but we can not get the money for it.
VG has been in contact with the mayor who refers to the comment he gave to Agderposten right after the rope cutting.

- It must be up to that person. We have been able to open as we should and that is the
most important thing, Nordli told Agderposten after the incident.

Leif Kydland a citizen of the city of Arendal in Norway protested the waste of $11M USD in taxpayers' money used to build a glass lift by cutting the ribbon ahead of the Mayor, exclaiming that since the taxpayers paid for the project, it was fitting that a taxpayer cut the ribbon.

Den omstridte glassheisen i Arendal skulle koste 50 millioner, men endte opp på opp mot 100. Prosjektet har ifølge NRK blitt omtalt som Sørlandets svar på stupetårnet i Hamar.

Under åpningen gikk Leif Kydland frem og klipte snoren av glassheisen foran øynene på ordfører Robert C. Nordli.

– Jeg gjorde det for å lage en demonstrasjon over feil pengebruk. Hadde vi vært en rik kommune der vi ikke trengte å snu på kronen hadde situasjonen vært en helt annen. Likevel hadde det vært galt å påkoste over 100 millioner for en liten heis. Utsikten er jo der. Det er bare å gå opp på heia, sier Leif Kydland til VG, og legger til:

– Hadde vi hatt en kommune med flust av penger hadde det vært greit. Det er glassheisen og økonomien som er den store snakkisen i Arendal by. Da er det selvfølgelig innbyggerne det går utover.

– Det jeg gjorde viser misnøyen som jeg har fordi vi har en dårlig stilt økonomisk kommune. Vi ble lovet at eiendomsskatten ikke skulle økes. Men etter en økonomisk krise ble kommunen tvunget til å øke eiendomsskatten over 100 prosent. Det gjør at de må tette igjen dårlig økonomisk styring, påstår Kydland.
Det var Agderposten som først omtalte saken.

– For mitt vedkommende fikk jeg økt eiendomsskatten med over hundre prosent. Nå må jeg ut med over 1000 kroner i måneden, og jeg har en vanlig bolig med helt vanlig beliggenhet, sier han.

Kydland mener kommunen ikke bør satse på turismen, men heller prioritere innbyggerne.

– Heisen blir sikkert en turistmagnet, men man kan ikke flyte på en turistmagnet koste hva det koste vil. Det er kostnadene som er hovedpoenget her. En vanlig mann i gaten har lyst på en Porsche Cayenne til to millioner, men vi kan ikke hente pengene til det.
VG har vært i kontakt med ordføreren som viser til kommentaren han ga til Agderposten rett etter snorklippingen.

– Det får være opp til den personen. Vi har fått åpnet som vi skal og det er det
viktigste, sa Nordli til Agderposten etter hendelsen.
