In this vlog we take you on a tour of the famous Medieval Tallinn Old Town which is a UNESCO World heritage site and one of the best preserved medieval cities in Europe! If you missed part 1 of the tour you can check it out here: https://youtu.be/KS9_EUf_NwQ

Part 2 of our tour of Tallinn Old Town begins in the lower part of the old town in Lai, as we walk through the passage of history and into the main Town Hall Square to look around what used to be the central hub and market place of this old Hanseatic town back in the middle ages.

We climb to the top of the Town Hall Tower which was only 4€ per person for entry and 115 steps high, but these are some seriously steep steps, there a rope/bannister to help pull you up a bit.

For lunch we head to the very well known Olde Hansa restaurant which is an authentic medieval restaurant with it’s own medieval shoppe attached.

After lunch we head back across the Old Town Square (Raekoja plats) to check out the oldest pharmacy in Europe (Raeapteek) which has continuously operated in the same premises with records dating back to 1422 and is still operating as a modern pharmacy today.

Turning left out of the pharmacy we head out of town hall square and walk along Vene to St. Nicholas’ Orthodox Church and then onto St. Peter & St. Paul’s Cathedral which has a beautiful courtyard garden with a quaint seating area for lunch, coffee and snacks. Along Vene you’ll find St. Catherine’s passage (Kateriina Käik - Kateriina lane) You can stroll straight through from Vene street to Müürivahe and past the very well preserved tomb stones exhibited on the south wall of the church which date back to the 14th and 15th centuries.

We then exit St. Catherines passage onto Müürivahe where we are met with the imposing Town Wall Walkway and Hellemann Tower. Turning left at the end of the Old town wall brings you onto Viru Tänav and directly in front of Viru Gate (Viru Väravad) - one of the last original gates to Tallinn old Town and a stunning entrance to it, the flower market!

We head straight back into the old town through Viru gate along Viru Tänav which is full of shops and restaurants and even has a museum with medieval torture instruments - Keskaegsete Piinariistade näitus which costs 8€ for entry and has over 50 exhibits.

We go past Sõprus cinema on our way over to Freedom square - get a little distracted by a super cute doggie who was cooling off in the water fountain and just wanted to play! :) We also stumble across Gloria restaurant which is tucked inside a wine cellar and is jam packed full of wines!

We finally get to Freedom square (Vabaduse Väljak) which is a modern and vast square with cafes and museums including the People’s Front Museum. Here you can’t miss the War of Independence Victory column which is a glass pillar and cross erected in 2009 to memorialise Estonia’s 1918-1920 War of Independence. The bright yellow church on the opposite side of Freedom square is St. John’s Church a 19th Century Lutheran church built in a neo-Gothic style.

We make our way along Niguliste to see St. Nicholas’ Church and Museum which was restored after WWII bombing and now houses the largest and most valuable ecclesiastical art collection in Estonia. We make our way up the steps of Lühike Jalg (little leg) back into the upper old town on the Toompea Hill and into the Danish Kings garden - birthplace of the Danish Flag (with an abstract sculpture of the Danish flag in front). Here you’ll be met by the three monks; Ambrosias, Bartholomeus and Claudius.

The other side of the Danish Kings Garden we finish our tour at the entrance to the Kiek in De Kök museum and Bastion tunnels.

A British couple from just outside London, England. We got married in 2018 and decided instead of a honeymoon we’d travel the world together for a year. We saved money and travel points, quit our jobs, rented our house out and boarded a one way flight. We started this Youtube channel to share our experiences with friends, family and anyone who plans to travel to the places we’re visiting. We leave TKT tips/facts on our vlogs and blogs to give information that we wish we’d had before visiting. We hope you find our content useful :)
