Tuesday April 9. 1940 Norway was occupied by Hitlers soldiers. The Norwegian government and most of the Norwegian people were totally unprepared. Norway's armed forces (Norges Forsvar) had been neglected for many years. Nevertheless the Norwegians decided to fight and at Narvik Norwegian, English and French soldiers made Hitler suffer his first severe defeat in The Second World War.
But the Norwegians were soon left alone and had to give up. King Haakon, kronprins Olav and the members of the government escaped to England and London in order to continue the war against nazism.
Along the long Norwegian Coast, the Germans made a large number for fortresses as part of Hitlers Atlantic Wall - in Norwegian: Atlanterhavsvollen.
In Arendal and Flosta in the Southern part of Norway, German and Norwegian workers buildt Kalvesund Fortress - in Norwegian: Kalvesund festning eller Flosta kystfort. Kalvesund Fortress protected the eastern entrance to Arendal in former Aust-Agder.
Today the fortress is a rekreation area owned by the local community.
