Hike along the old railway from Egersund to Hellvik | Norway | Enchanting Voyage

The railway route between Stavanger and Egersund was completed between 1874 and 1878. The narrow-gauge track wandered between stones and ponds in the mountainous terrain between Hellvik and Egersund until it was relocated in conjunction with the development of the Srlandsbanen line. The switch to conventional tracks, as well as tougher curvature restrictions, necessitated the construction of an entirely new line route between Hellvik and Launessundet. Following the opening of the Srlandsbanen line in 1944, nearly the whole old railway route was left disused and decaying for over 40 years.

After several years of planning and evaluation, the municipality of Eigersund was finally allowed to begin building work on a continuous walking/cycling route that mostly followed the ancient Jrbanen's track from Hellvik to Egersund in 1997.

Between Hellvik and Egersund, the former Jærbanen is now one of the district's most scenic and diverse hiking and bike paths. Stunning perspectives, alternations between wide heather fields, sheltering forests, and beautiful skerries, towering rock cuts, enormous rock fills, and numerous vestiges of the ancient railway history are now available to hikers and cyclists.
